Interpol at the Water Street Music Hall.
This was one of the best shows I've ever been to at Water Street. They sounded amazing in a place not known for great sound quality.

James Hunter / Smash Mouth
Rochester International Jazz Festival.
We had so much fun at the jazz fest yesterday, we decided to go back today to see James Hunter. Great fun - a sorta Englishman's take on rockabilly. On the way home, we stopped to catch a beer and give Smash Mouth a listen. Not that great, and the crowd was kinda bored, so we ducked into my favorite local bar, the Old Toad. When we came out later, we walked back to give Smash Mouth one last listen, hoping to maybe catch the encore. No kidding - they were ripping the place up! What I would call a solid cover-band with the huge crowd totally into it. Their encore was House of Pain followed by three Van Halen songs. They closed with their one hit - All Star. Great fun to close out the fest....Smash Mouth...who knew...

From the summit of Mount Elbert.
Hiked up 14,433 foot high Mt. Elbert, the state's highest mountain. What a view.

clouds roll over the summit.
ten miles round trip, 4,400 feet elevation gain.

i'm hiking down off the mountain and i run into a couple of hikers looking for distance to a good camping zone. turns out they are from Rochester too! how crazy is that...

Redstone Coke Ovens.
Spent the day heading back north. Stopped in Redstone when I saw all these beehive coke ovens outside of town. Once used by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company to carbonize coal.

Independence.
Stopped in at this ghost town that in the late 1800's was a gold mining boomtown.
